Holidays are so much fun, but every holiday revolves around candy! Candy is great until your toddler gets an entire basket and wants to eat it in one day. Even when you portion out the candy, they’re still eating so much sugar! Since Easter is coming up, I have researched and compiled a list of candy-free Easter egg filler ideas.
One of my favorite memories growing up on Easter was Easter Egg hunts. The anticipation as you wait for the organizers to yell go, the running around trying to grab as many eggs as possible to fill your basket, the laughter as all the children are running like crazy. It is such a sweet memory and I can feel like I’m back there again when thinking about it. To me, the memories were never about all the candy I received, but about the Easter egg hunt itself.
If your goal is to give your children fond memories of Easter egg hunts to look back on, but maybe not a ton of candy, that is okay! And it is more than doable! To celebrate Easter with an Easter egg hunt you don’t need only candy stuffed Easter eggs! There are so many different Easter egg fillers that aren’t candy. As a mom of toddlers, this list is composed of my favorite Easter egg fillers for toddlers.
How to Make Easter Egg Fillers Toddler-Safe
Toddlers are at risk of choking on a lot of things, so I try to be extra cautious with what I put in their Easter eggs. Things such as small marbles, popcorn, gum, and hard candies should be avoided. You want toddler-safe Easter egg fillers to prevent any choking and keep your kids safe.
I want to remind you, water beads are dangerous, especially when swallowed by toddlers, preschoolers, and older children. A lot of retailers have stopped selling them marketed to younger children due to risks associated with them being swallowed or placed inside other body cavities such as nose or ear. They have not been included in this list of non-candy easter egg fillers due to their unsafe nature.

Remember, there are different-sized plastic Easter eggs to fill as well. There are the normal small ones and the jumbo ones. So you don’t only have to get tiny toys and choking hazards to go into the Easter eggs.
Candy-Free Easter Egg Filler Ideas that are Food
Just because you don’t want to give your children eggs full of candy, doesn’t mean they can’t have some favorite snacks in their eggs! You can place healthy Easter egg fillers in their eggs or go a little crazy and give sugary cereal like fruit loops! The point of these foods are that they are safe for your toddler to eat, not things you’ll have to take away or worry about them choking on.
- Gerber puffs
- Goldfish
- Gerber crunchies
- Animal crackers
- Cheerios
- Fruit loops
Easter Egg Toy Stuffers
Another great option for non-candy Easter egg stuffers is toys! What toddlers and preschoolers don’t love toys?! Some of these toys may be big enough to need the jumbo Easter eggs, but some may be perfect for the regular size eggs!
- Matchbox cars (for kids 3 and up)
- Fisher price little people
- Finger puppets
- Barbie clothes (these can come with choking hazards, you will want to be careful with what you pick out)
- Silly Putty (Bonus, silly putty can come in an egg container too!)
- Mini Play-Doh
- Legs
- Plastic Animals
- Plastic Toy Characters
- Mini Slinky
- Small Bath Toys
- Slap Bracelet
- Puzzle Pieces: this one may sound crazy, but place one puzzle piece in each egg and then spend the time after the Easter egg hunt putting the puzzle together. This is a great way to spend quality time with your toddlers after a fun afternoon.
Creative Easter Egg Fillers
You can utilize different arts and crafts supplies you would be purchasing anyways to have toddler-safe Easter egg fillers! This will also give you activities to do with your toddler that doesn’t involve screen time.
- Easter coloring pages
- Mini crayons
- Stamps
- Stickers
- Temporary tattoos
Candy-Free Easter Egg Filler Ideas: Outside Toys
Giving your children fun outside toys to help encourage outside play is a great option! With the warmer weather coming up, we definitely want our children to be outside getting sunshine and exercise.
- Sidewalk chalk
- Mini bubbles– There aren’t many bubbles, that will fit in Easter eggs, but these ones should do!
- Seeds to plant
Unique Easter Egg Fillers
These non-candy Easter egg fillers can be so exciting for little toddlers! These may not be toys they can play with, but they are practical Easter egg fillers as well. And why not have fun with practical gifts like giving your toddler bandaids with their favorite superhero or Disney princess on them?!
- Toddler-safe nail polish– This is a great non-toxic nail polish from Amazon!
- Hair bows
- Hair Ties
- Colorful band-aids
- Money (dollar bills, not coins since coins are a choking hazard for toddlers)
- Magic Wash Cloth that Grows in the Water
- Easter theme socks
Religious Easter Egg Fillers
If you want to give your children a fun Easter Egg hunt but want to incorporate the true meaning of Easter, religious Easter egg fillers are a great option! There’s nothing wrong with other toys and candies, but keeping Christ at the center of your children’s Easter is important too.
These Easter egg fillers are quite large and probably wouldn’t fit into Easter eggs for your children. Instead, you can give them little raffle tickets or homemade tickets to have them bring to you in exchange for their prize. I would probably make homemade tickets over purchasing raffle tickets, since you get so many tickets.
- Books that teach about the story of Easter
- Religious Coloring Books
- Little People Noah’s Ark Set
- Water Wow Pad: Bible stories
- Toddler Devotional Book– The Beginner’s Bible is our favorite toddler bible, so this is great to go along with that!

As Easter approaches, remember your toddlers are incredibly excited about the Easter festivities. They don’t need a ton of candy in their Easter baskets or Easter egg fillers to be happy. What will make them happy is celebrating the Holiday with their family and friends. When they get older and look back on special memories, they’ll remember how you made each Holiday feel for them.
No matter what you decide to stuff your Easter eggs with, I hope you remember the true meaning of Easter. Jesus died on the cross for us and conquered death by rising again!! It is such a beautiful holiday and reminds us of how blessed we are. Don’t forget to share this message with your children to help them grow in their faith.
