Valentine’s Day Traditions to Start with Your Kids

Valentine’s day does not only have to be about celebrating your love with your significant other! You can use this holiday to show extra love to your children as well. I remember growing up we always had a little stuffed animal from our parents waiting for us. That was just one of the Valentine’s day traditions we had and I still remember it all these years later.

I love spoiling my kids a little extra on Valentine’s Day and including them in the fun! I want my kids to grow up and think back to the Valentine’s Days they had as children and how loved they are. Here are a list of Valentine’s Day traditions I do with my kids and some that I plan on starting this year!

Starting a tradition with your family is such a simple way to make memories together. I’d love to have you join me in some of these Valentine’s Day traditions!

Valentine’s Day Traditions to Start This Year

14 Days of Love Notes– Okay this one is the one I am most excited about! I saw it last year on one of my favorite influencer’s (Daryl-Ann) instagram and fell in love! Essentially you take construction paper and cut it into heart shapes. Every morning from February 1-14 your child will wake up with a new heart shape on their bedroom door with a reason why you love them. It is such a special way to show your kids how much you love them! Not only that, but it will truly make you think about why your kids are special. And it can make your kids feel so good to see all these special qualities about them written down.

Valentine’s Baskets for Kids– I love getting my kids little valentine’s baskets each year to have when they wake up on Valentine’s Day! This does not have to be anything expensive or extravagant. I typically give them a little stuffed animal, an outfit or pajamas, some candy, and a small toy. It is just so special to show them in so many ways how much I love them!

Family Breakfast– This is one I want to start this year as well! We typically all eat breakfast at different times, but eating together will be so special. My oldest LOVES Chick-fil-A so getting some to bring home for breakfast will be such a special surprise! You don’t have to go out and buy breakfast though. You can make a breakfast spread at home to celebrate Valentine’s Day! They make heart shaped waffle makers so you can have a theme breakfast.

Special School Lunch– This is one I plan to use when my children are in school because it seems so fun! Pack your children a lunch that is Valentine’s Day themed! Maybe cut their sandwich into a heart shape, pack them strawberries cut in the shape of hearts, and some red peppers and ranch to stick to a red theme. You can even throw in a chocolate kiss for dessert! I also plan on putting a little valentine for my kids to pull out of their lunchbox when they go to lunch.

Decorations– If you are on a budget, you don’t have to order expensive decorations! The Dollar Tree typically has seasonal decorations that work great for these small holidays. But decorating the house, especially the night before Valentine’s day so the kids wake up to decor is so exciting!

The Most Important Valentine’s Day Tradition of All

Showing our children where love really comes from!

God is love and I want to take every chance I get to reiterate this to my children. My most important job as a mom is to point my children to God. And that is more than just taking them to church on Sunday mornings. It is also including God in all of our family holidays and through our daily lives.

So as my children are getting older and able to understand more, it is important for me to bring this tradition into our household this year. We will discuss God and that we love because He first loved us.

This Valentine’s Day I want to practice two bible verses with my children so they can start to memorize bible verses early.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7

“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

Whatever you choose to do to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year I hope and pray it is so special for you! I hope you take your own Valentine’s day traditions and celebrate this holiday by showing those you love that you love them.

  1. I would buy little gifts, such as a box of valentines hearts, a heart sucker, balloon, card, etc and place on my girl’s pillow each night for the 14 days of Valentines.
